Earlier images

There are not too many images of the town in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.

It can be seen in the illustration that the area of St Thomas was open to the sea unlike today. How many are aware that in about 1620 Swansea was affected by a tidal surge or perhaps Tsumami that devastated the small town. Areas have hidden description in them, the area of the town known as Sandfields was an area of sandy fields near the beach. Interestingly, the old football field there known as the Vetch is named after a type of grass grown locally. Also, Orchard Street was just that – an orchard.
